“You are the average of the five people you most associate with.”
– Tim Ferriss
I first heard this quote by Tim Ferriss a few years ago. The basic premise of this idea is that over time, your behavior and characteristics will take on the average of the five people you associate with the most. It got me thinking about my own associations in relation to what I aim to be. The beauty of this is proximity is not an issue and one just need to identify the five people whose behaviors they want to associate with.
At present, I am at the stage of my life where I start having a sense of confidence in my own ability while still searching for something to devote my life to. I also have the desire for striking a balance between earning a good income and doing work that is worthwhile of my time on this planet. To guide me through it all, I have five people I turn to frequently for calibrating my inner compass as I navigate through my various challenges.
My current five are Maria Poppova, Tim Ferriss, Derek Sivers, Richard Feynman, and Kevin Kelly. They all embody the life I am striving for, one of beauty, high-performance, whimsical, with some mischief and lots of wonderment. Who are your five?
“Life is long, if you know how to use it.”
– Seneca, On the Shortness of Life
