On Desire

“Desire is a contract you make with yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want.”

– Naval Ravikant

A while back, I was taken by this quote from Naval Ravikant. It was through Tim Ferriss’ podcast with Naval and it was a wide-ranging all round interesting conversation. Naval shares a lot on his philosophical views on living a good life.

When discussing on happiness with family and friends, a thing that comes up frequently is how some people who seem to have everything in the world imaginable but are not happy while they are others who seem to be plagued by constant misfortune but live their days wearing smiles on their faces.

The quote above from Naval resonates with me a lot in this regard and I too believe desire is one of the key elements to our happiness. In the end, we ultimately decide to be happy or not. The choice is ours.

Choose happy.
